village life in the city
I took this picture early in the morning from a moving car at Mwananyamala in Dar es Salaam. Most probably the family had already taken breakfast because the woman with her back on the camera was washing utensils. A majority of the inhabitants in this place are low income earners. The white and pink pales are containers used to fetch water as most houses in this area are not supplied with piped water or for those that have the pipes run dry. You may wonder why the lady has to do the cleaning at door and dressed with her bosom exposed..

Feeding the nation
Mama soko, as I called her, is playing a significant role in contributing towards the economic growth of her country by selling small scale agricultural produce at Mwananyamala market in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. She stays near the market and is therefore able to get to the market early enough to buy the best vegetables brought by farmers from outside Dar es Salaam. To attract customers she maintains a high degree of neatness because in Dar es Salaam many people are particular about dressing. “Would you buy anything from me if you found me dirty?” she paused.
when hot take a dip
The people in this photograph live along the coast close to the sea. I took this photograph at Kivukoni channel in the city of Dar es Salaam around midday when the sun was hot. At such a time many of the coastal inhabitants saunter and lazy about along the beach to get a cool breeze from the ocean. Here, they showcase what is one of their best recreational activities: swimming. Guess what economic activity these people would engage in.
